I’ve written an article about how players that succeed in World Cups deserve all the plaudits they get, but that it is also important to remember the world class players in average international sides. It’s on my blog, MoronsTalkAboutFootball on WordPress. Search MoronsTalkAboutFootball on google and my blog should be the first result. The post is called The World Cup; reasons to be glad of its imminence (1) … Have a read if you like.
@LordAntWarrior Cheers. Of course the Munich air disaster could be said to have affected England’s chances almost as much as Manchester United’s at the time. But the ’58 World Cup was the first one that English fans really took an interest in. Not long after that of course, it was announced which nation would be hosting the 1966 tournament, and things were never the same again.
@LordAntWarrior For looking back at pre-58 World Cups, both the BBC and ITV use the official FIFA film footage. But most of it has withered with time and is sadly unusable now.
@LordAntWarrior England did take part in 1950 and 1954. But English people in general just couldn’t see the point in the tournament. Three key things saw that gradually change over that decade – the USA winning 1-0 in 1950, THAT Hungary friendly in 1953 and Matt Busby taking Man Utd into the European Cup in 1956 -against the FA’s wishes. Busby and his Babes proved that there was a romantic challenge in international comps.
@kisbie I think it’s probarbly because England didn’t bother entering the World Cup until 1958. Even so, you can’t blame them- they can’t use footage of other countries’ coverage of matches without copyright complications, and so it is safer for them just to stick to matches that were covered on British TV. Or so it would seem.
@TheJonaton That Roberto Carlos Free Kick was not in the World Cup. It was in the Tournei De France which was a World Cup warm-up tournament between Brazil, England, France and Italy.
