Summer Soccer Training: Endurance

Summer is finally here in the Midwest. I Started off a beautiful Saturday morning with a Coaches game. Every season after the rec league ends our club has a game with just the coaches. The kids love the idea and it is a lot of fun (especially when you score four goals!). But boy, am I out of shape. Out of soccer shape that is. I religiously get 150 minutes plus per week of aerobic training on my elliptical machine. But that no way translates to endurance training for stop and go running and sprinting on the soccer field.
So that makes me think of conditioning for the summer!
Here is a sample conditioning regimen for your kids. Keep in mind that different levels require different training. But have your kids turn off the Wii or Xbox and get outside to do some foot skills and running.
Here are some ideas.
- For the younger kids you can have kids run around the house a couple of times. (we often joke about that don’t we parents!)
- Kids can run sprints from one side of the back yard to the other, then to rest they can walk back to where they started and sprint back again.
- Like anything, make a game of it. Have kids run around the house with a ball at their feet so they can practice control. Have them go half speed at first. Then you can have them step it up to 75% speed and so on.
- If you are really hardcore you can make them run hills like my high school coach did!
Endurance is so important. I would like to play in an over 30 league this fall. So I am going to start with some conditioning now so I don’t find myself being out of breath like I was today. Have your kids get ready for the fall season too, plus it will get them out of the house to enjoy summer vacation!
